1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Church Cottages, Woodditton, with his father James SWANN [55] a labourer; his mother Sarah [49] and brothers Thomas [15] labourer, and Edward [12]. The whole family were born in Woodditton

He enlisted in Huntingdon.
He died at No.1 Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge. On 17 September 1914 work commenced towards the building of a military ‘shadow’ hospital on land which had been used as cricket grounds, shared by King’s College and Clare College, and eventually became the University Library. On 17 October 1914, the first patients were admitted to the First Eastern General Hospital (Territorial Force), which comprised several rows of huts bounded on the north by Burrell’s Walk. No medal roll index card for Robert has been found, indicating perhaps that he never got to serve abroad.

The wording on his headstone is incorrect as the 'Royal" suffix for the Corps was not awarded until 1918.
