Robert Swann was born in Woodditton (Newmarket Q1-1896 3B:493) , son of James and Sarah SWANN(née HOBBS).
1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Church Cottages, Woodditton, with his father James SWANN [55] a labourer; his mother Sarah [49] and brothers Thomas [15] labourer, and Edward [12]. The whole family were born in Woodditton 1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was at Church Cottages, Woodditton with his parents and brothers William Thomas and Edward James. both farm labourers. Three of Sarah's eight children had died. At some time later his parents moved to 60 Knock Hall Road, Greenhithe, Kent. |

He enlisted in Huntingdon. He died at No.1 Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge. On 17 September 1914 work commenced towards the building of a military ‘shadow’ hospital on land which had been used as cricket grounds, shared by King’s College and Clare College, and eventually became the University Library. On 17 October 1914, the first patients were admitted to the First Eastern General Hospital (Territorial Force), which comprised several rows of huts bounded on the north by Burrell’s Walk. No medal roll index card for Robert has been found, indicating perhaps that he never got to serve abroad. |
